Best VPN for UK users in 2026 (we tested 9)

A VPN is one of those things that sounds like paranoia until you need one. Then it's the most important £3/month you'll ever spend. Whether you're streaming content that's geo-blocked, using public Wi-Fi without handing your passwords to strangers, or just don't want your ISP logging every site you visit — a VPN is the answer.

We tested nine VPNs over four weeks. Speed tests at peak time (9pm Sunday), streaming unblocks for BBC iPlayer, Netflix US, and Disney+, and a deep dive into logging policies because half the "no-logs" claims are absolute cobblers.

★ The verdict

Fast, genuinely no-logs (independently audited), unblocks everything we threw at it, and the UK servers actually hit 400Mbps+. The app doesn't nag you, and the price is fair.

Winner: NordVPN·9.3/10

How we tested

Speed. We tested from a 500Mbps Virgin line at 9pm on Sunday — peak time, when everyone's streaming. We ran three tests per server location and averaged.

Streaming unblock. We checked BBC iPlayer, Netflix US, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video. A VPN that can't unblock iPlayer from the UK is missing the basics.

Logging policy. We read the actual privacy policy (yes, all of them) and checked for independent audits. "No logs" means nothing without proof.

App quality. A VPN with a clunky app is a VPN you'll stop using. We judged speed, simplicity, and whether it auto-connects when you join Wi-Fi.

The winner: NordVPN

NordVPN wins because it does everything well without being the most expensive:

  • Speed: 420Mbps average on UK servers, 380Mbps on US East. Fast enough for 4K streaming.
  • Streaming: Unblocks iPlayer, Netflix US, Disney+, and Prime. NordLynx protocol is the reason — it's WireGuard-based and genuinely quick.
  • No-logs: Independently audited by PwC (twice). They don't store what you do, full stop.
  • App: Clean, fast, auto-connects on untrusted Wi-Fi. Has a kill switch that actually works.
  • Price: £2.50–£3.50/month on a 2-year plan. Cancel anytime in the first 30 days.

The only downside: the map-based server picker is fiddly on mobile. But once you've set your favourites, it's fine.

The runner-up: ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is excellent — fast, reliable, great app. It's our runner-up only because NordVPN matches it on everything for about half the price. If money's no object, ExpressVPN at £5–£7/month is a perfectly valid choice. The router app is genuinely the best in the business if you want whole-house VPN.

The budget pick: Surfshark

Surfshark at £1.50–£2.50/month is the budget champion. Speeds are good (350Mbps+), unlimited devices on one account, and it unblocks most streaming. The app is a bit busier than Nord's, but for the price, it's outstanding value.

Free VPNs: the warning

Do not use a free VPN. The business model is either:

  1. Selling your browsing data to advertisers (the thing you got a VPN to prevent)
  2. Serving you ads through the VPN tunnel
  3. Botnet-style bandwidth sharing (Hola VPN, we're looking at you)

The only free VPN we'd even consider is ProtonVPN Free — and that limits you to three server locations and no streaming. Pay the £3/month.

What to actually look for

  1. WireGuard or NordLynx protocol. OpenVPN is fine but slower.
  2. Kill switch. If the VPN drops, your traffic shouldn't leak.
  3. Audited no-logs policy. A claim is not a guarantee.
  4. UK servers. You need them for iPlayer and UK content.
  5. Money-back guarantee. 30 days minimum.
